Ecosia – is the world’s first nature friendly web search engine. The claim is a 80% income sharing to an initiative that plants trees. The search engine itself belongs to a German based company – Ecosia GmbH which has an international partnership with WWF. The attempt is to save the amazon forest range on a region called Tumucumaque on northern Brazil.
Why Amazon?
Amazon forests cover 18% of the world’s forest and alterations to this ecosystem has adverse effects on the environment around the world. This region was selected along with many others in Amazon by the WWF. The Amazon region produces some of the best flora and fauna and rapid deforestation of the forest is a cause of concern for environmentalist.
How Ecosia helps ?
With Ecosia search engine – powered by bing and yahoo, any sponsored link clicked will raise money for this initiative. By 2010, about 123,000 Euros were collected just by users searching using Ecosia. This does go a long way to helping our nature.
Ecosia also makes sure the carbon associated with every search made on Ecosia is offset to balance out the impact. This is done by collaborating with PURE – a UK based carbon offset charity which invest for projects creating renewable energy sources.
